Supporting community wellbeing through compassionate counsellingAs part of International Volunteer Year (IVY) 2026, we are showcasing 26 local organisations and highlighting how volunteers are making a difference in their communities.

SOSAD International is one of these organisations, where volunteers play a vital role in supporting mental health and wellbeing across the region.SOSAD International provides vital low-cost, confidential counselling and suicide prevention support for people across the community.

Their mission is to make mental health care accessible for everyone, especially those who might otherwise face financial or personal barriers to seeking help.Counsellor Gabriella, one of SOSAD International’s dedicated volunteers, explains:

“Here at SOSAD International we provide low-cost, confidential counselling and suicide prevention. Our team is made up of volunteers, and we aim to support the community with their mental health.”

Volunteers at the heart of care

Volunteers play a central role in everything SOSAD International does. From counselling to community outreach, they bring compassion, skill, and dedication to each session. Every volunteer counsellor receives in-house training, supervision, and ongoing support to ensure the highest standard of care.

Gabriella says,

“SOSAD supports its counsellors through in-house training and supervision, and volunteers make a huge difference. We’re here for free because we have a huge passion for what we do.”This commitment to training and volunteer wellbeing ensures that SOSAD International can continue offering professional, empathetic support to those in need – a lifeline for many individuals and families across Louth and beyond.

Making a difference every day

For many who walk through SOSAD International’s doors, it’s often their first experience of counselling. The organisation’s open, non-judgmental environment helps people find the courage to talk and begin their journey toward healing.

“Many people who come into SOSAD never realised they needed counselling before,” Gabriella reflects. “It’s really accessible for them and very helpful.”

Why volunteering matters

Volunteering at SOSAD International isn’t just about giving time, it’s about saving lives. Every conversation, every session, and every act of compassion contributes to a safer, healthier community. As Gabriella puts it simply,
