International Volunteer Year (IVY) 2026 Volunteer Spotlight - Dundalk Dog Rescue

The first steps toward trust

Two weeks earlier, a volunteers recalled standing in a play pen , watching the dogs keep to the corner, too unsure to come close - “we couldn’t get near them.”After a long walk, something shifted. What began as cautious sniffing - “sniffing and sniffing” - slowly turned into curiosity, a quiet coming out of themselves. With each walk and gentle interaction, they were learning to trust, beginning “to realise they’re getting well fed, well exercised… meeting people.” It’s in these small, patient moments that change happens - moments any volunteer can be part of.Step by step, they were moving closer to the chance of a forever home - “at the end of it, that’s what it’s all about.”

Rewarding role of a volunteer

Volunteers at Dundalk Dog Rescue take on a variety of tasks, from walking and playing with dogs to feeding them and maintaining the cleanliness of the kennels. However, the most rewarding aspect of volunteering is witnessing the transformation of the dogs. As one volunteer shared, it’s incredibly inspiring to see a dog that initially trembles with fear gradually gain confidence, learn to trust humans, and ultimately find its forever home. For many volunteers, it’s the emotional connection they build with the animals that makes the experience so fulfilling.
