International Volunteer Year (IVY) 2026 Volunteer Spotlight : Over 55 & Thriving

International Volunteer Year (IVY) 2026 - Volunteer Spotlight: Over 55 & Thriving

As part of Louth Volunteer Centre’s 26 of 26 project, we’re shining a light on our Over 55 & Thriving, which celebrated the older volunteers who give their time, skills and experience to communities across Louth.

What is the Over 55 & Thriving project?

Through 26 of 26, we’re introducing you to the volunteer-involving organisations across Louth. Behind every one of them are volunteers like these.

The Over 55 project was created to celebrate the older volunteers in our community and to show what volunteering means to them. It became a documentary film where they share their favourite moments, the benefits of volunteering and the advice they would give to others.

In Their Own Words

Ask our volunteers about their experiences and they don’t talk about hours or tasks. They talk about moments. They remember “the crack we had and the friendships you build up.” They remember the pure joy of seeing people succeed and come home with a smile. And they feel proud when they see something they helped build make a difference for the community.

Their message for anyone thinking about volunteering is simple:

“If you can have a few hours to spare, why not.”

Why It Matters

Volunteering is good for the community, and it’s good for you too. Our volunteers talk about meeting new people, staying active and feeling part of something bigger. There’s no right age to start. Whether you’re young or young at heart, there’s a volunteering role for you.

Get Involved

If watching their stories moved you even a little, that’s usually the first sign it’s worth trying. You don’t need special skills, just a little time and a willingness to show up.
